Press release

The Eiffage consortium wins the first desalination plant in Senegal for a contract worth nearly 146 million euros*

Eiffage, through its subsidiaries Eiffage Génie Civil and Eiffage Senegal, won the contract awarded by SONES (National Water Company of Senegal) to design, build and operate for 24 months the future Mamelles seawater desalination plant in Dakar, Senegal. The contract is for nearly 146 million euros*.

The consortium, led by Eiffage Génie Civil, includes Eiffage Senegal as well as India’s VA Tech Wabag and Japan’s Toyota Tsusho Corporation. Eiffage teams will be responsible for the design and construction work, VA Tech Wabag will oversee the water treatment process, and Toyota Tsusho Corporation will co-lead the project with Eiffage. The contracting authority for the project is SONES, while its prime contractor is the Japanese firm Nippon Koei.

The 30-month contract is part of the Plan Sénégal Emergent, which aims to make drinking water universally accessible by 2035. The project is funded by the Senegalese government, under a Japanese loan agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

With a daily production capacity of 50,000 m3 of drinking water, this plant will be the largest in West Africa when it is in operation. In addition to providing a diversified source of drinking water in Senegal, the plant will improve the water supply capacity of the country’s capital, meeting the needs of around one million inhabitants of Dakar.

This new contract in Senegal, where Eiffage has been present for 96 years, testifies to the confidence that the Senegalese authorities place in the Group and consolidates its position in Africa as a major prime contractor for large complex projects. Eiffage is also confirming its expertise in the growing desalination plant market after delivering the Doraleh plant in Djibouti in 2021.
